     The Lessons

Lessons are generally once a week for an hour and fees are dependent upon the number of tutees sharing a lesson.

Typically, I provide 1:1 tailored tuition in my home in Didsbury or online via Zoom, but group tuition is an option for those who prefer it.

Once areas for development have been identified from a thorough assessment, lessons are tailored to individual needs and learning style, with clear, achievable aims.

My tutees make excellent progress because I transmit my enthusiasm, make lessons fun and apply a multi-sensory teaching approach which includes drawing on my extensive bank of learning resources, many of which I have designed to accommodate all areas and individual needs.

During term-time I generally tutor weekdays until 7 p.m., and restrict tuition to the minimum during school holiday periods.

Please access my contact page HERE to enquire about current availability.

Generally, I am fully booked with a waiting list for after school hours. Should this be the case when you apply,  I will endeavour to let you know as soon as a suitable place becomes available.

Child Tuition

Lessons are mapped to the National Curriculum for all key stages, including the following areas:

11+ Preparation Spelling Strategies Handwriting
Recount Writing Grammar Vocabulary
Essay Writing Punctuation CEM & GL 11+ exams
Narrative Writing Comprehension Reading
Descriptive Writing Exam Strategies Verbal Reasoning
Planning & Structure SATS Preparation  Speaking & Listening

I hold an enhanced up-to-date DBS certificate (2019) to work with children and vulnerable adults which is available to view on request, along with my professional qualifications.

I have wide experience teaching very diverse abilities from severe learning difficulties, autism, sensory impairments, literacy-related learning difficulties to exceptionally gifted children.

Children require my tuition services for a variety of reasons, though the majority come to me for 11+ grammar school entrance examination preparation, especially for Manchester Grammar, Withington Girls', Manchester High, Stockport Grammar,  Cheadle Hulme and the Trafford Grammar schools (CEM & GL exams). Over many years I have gathered an extensive bank of past and sample entrance exam papers for these and other grammar schools and my success rate in procuring places into them (including places for tutees with dyslexia) is exceptional: many years 100%  for preferred/top grammar schools.

I often work with the same family over a number of years for several siblings, and the majority of my tutees come to me by word of mouth.

Adult Tuition

Many of my adult tutees come to me simply to ‘brush up’ on their English skills, while others are concerned about their work-related English or their uncertainty about how to support their children's literacy.

Some require ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tuition, while others, due to a variety of reasons,  have missed much of their formative education and require Basic Literacy tuition. Those with dyslexia come to me to learn strategies to overcome their barriers to learning.

I also support tutees with their academic dissertations and vocational training courses covering planning, research strategies, grammar, punctuation, proofreading and Harvard referencing.

I hold high expectations for both my tutees and myself. Homework is therefore an integral component of my lessons to reinforce and practise what has been learnt. Equally, completed homework enables me to assess tutee understanding and inform future lesson planning.

The amount of homework will be negotiated and agreed on from the onset, and dependant upon the tutee's age and other commitments. Obviously, the more homework completed, the faster one’s progress will be.

Workplace English

For business clients wishing to improve employees' English to ensure they are communicating services and products effectively, I offer group tuition within the workplace or one-to-one from my home in Didsbury.

Once I have identified common needs (for group teaching) and individual needs, I tailor learning plans to individual needs and the company's business profile.

Embedded or stand-alone Basic Computing tuition can also be delivered if required.
